I've been contemplating cleaning up this space for quite some time. Finally I am getting a chance to redesign and reorganise! Love it!<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjZhyiHH0JhGMLNcuSlrTpHdTC9w1phNIMcO5NLeRBRG7vpqp9QHnvKzr-1NB1WgYZcAZTY1lZ6ZHzdM2KjHci53GlWdcWVsToMrxNR7-4m6bcPDQDvi_ytUOtJmvOuNKGbQUOvefbaixo/s1600/2014final+banner.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjZhyiHH0JhGMLNcuSlrTpHdTC9w1phNIMcO5NLeRBRG7vpqp9QHnvKzr-1NB1WgYZcAZTY1lZ6ZHzdM2KjHci53GlWdcWVsToMrxNR7-4m6bcPDQDvi_ytUOtJmvOuNKGbQUOvefbaixo/s1600/2014final+banner.jpg" height="156" width="640" /></a></div>
<br />
For the past two years I was crazy about colours. I wanted my blog to have lots of colourful images and I really enjoyed making monthly collages for the blog's banner. Today, I find my colourful pages too busy and awfully messy. I am drawn to simple designs, to neutral colours, to black and white palettes, and I am crazy about simple bold fonts. So I spent the beginning of the year working on the new design for my blog. I know how I want it to look and, more importantly, I know how to make it look this way.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjkSE3LzuCRHkpIIDG2A2DjDER8JtcR-5Eq6iUUMm0oiMBVtsbTADRg7XPlZ4Wob0FgZvdf4fE5oJir1rUqDdiAyzCB3V9zWXp9ty9V1UsxZYM5oj8aRuYiuLnGnbaGmqt8RCkrXpwxdeo/s1600/Image+2.png" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjkSE3LzuCRHkpIIDG2A2DjDER8JtcR-5Eq6iUUMm0oiMBVtsbTADRg7XPlZ4Wob0FgZvdf4fE5oJir1rUqDdiAyzCB3V9zWXp9ty9V1UsxZYM5oj8aRuYiuLnGnbaGmqt8RCkrXpwxdeo/s1600/Image+2.png" height="430" width="640" /></a></div>
<br />
<br />
<br />
Over the next several weeks I will be changing different elements of SAS does. The wise thing would be to wait and do all changes at once but I am impatient (and frankly I am getting really tired of the old look) so I will be doing it one element at a time.<br />
<br />
Once again, please bear with me while things are being adjusted and let me know if you like the new look!<br />

Painters, photographers, scrapbookers are invited to create an endless book: 52 pages of illustrations without borders or edges, one illustration per week. At the end of the year each of us will have one panoramic "image".<br />
<br />

<br />
Before starting the project one needs a Leporello bound notebook. I chose to use paper bags for mine - easy and perfect for collages/scrapbook pages I am planning on making.<br />
<blockquote class="tr_bq">
<a href="http://brownlivres.blogspot.ca/2006/09/leporello.html" target="_blank">The name leporello is derived from the opera Don Giovanni. Leporello was his manservant. He kept a record of Don Giovanni's female conquests in a book. At the end of Act II he spread the book across the stage. It's an accordion fold of unlimited width. Pages are joined to form the accordion.</a></blockquote>
</i><br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEi-0YtTay5wQ5fFpFTh_2Hbjq0q8Z3cDw1ds11oZIx0YLgWv8b9bZBRZzo_OHSkRn8v2GgFU_JGw0F78a_HKkFjR8kNrY3WTn1gp5hXnpdMQvll8SXlIoFlbq2JFcBiEkJTNX4Gfreg_us/s1600/1+paperbag+leporello.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEi-0YtTay5wQ5fFpFTh_2Hbjq0q8Z3cDw1ds11oZIx0YLgWv8b9bZBRZzo_OHSkRn8v2GgFU_JGw0F78a_HKkFjR8kNrY3WTn1gp5hXnpdMQvll8SXlIoFlbq2JFcBiEkJTNX4Gfreg_us/s640/1+paperbag+leporello.jpg" height="426" width="640" /></a></div>
<i>Вам понадобятся: бумажные пакеты, клей (можно использовать любой, но я выбрала двустороннюю клейкую ленту, которая не коробит бумагу) и ножницы/кисточка для клея.</i><br />
<i> </i>
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

<br />
For the "endless" book you will need to connect the top of one bag with the bottom of the second one.<br />
<br />
<i>Для создания бесконечной гармошки один пакет будем склеивать с другим.

<br />
Note: add "pages" on both sides of the block. Adding bags to one side only will cause your block to be uneven.<br />
<br />
<i>Совет: добавляйте страницы-пакеты и к началу и к концу блока, таким образом ваш блок будет более ровным и его не перекосит в сторону. </i><br />

<br />
Time to make covers:<br />
<br />
<i>Для обложек нам понадобятся два прямоугольника из плотного картона, чуть больше по размерам чем сам блок (у меня получились 24смx14см). Их можно обтянуть тканью или обклеить бумагой.</i><br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

<br />
<i>Готовые обложки просто приклейте к последним страницам блока</i><br />

This is how your paper bag leporello bound book will look like.<br />
I am anxious to start <a href="http://conjure.livejournal.com/tag/endless_book" target="_blank">An Endless Book project</a> in January. I hope I'll be able to keep up and will share weekly pages with you, my readers. <br />
<br />
<i>А вот как книга лепорелло из бумажных пакетов выглядит внутри.</i><br />
<i>Я с нетерпением жду начала проекта <a href="http://conjure.livejournal.com/tag/endless_book" target="_blank">Бесконечная Книга</a>. Надеюсь у меня будет достаточно времени чтобы не бросить затею на пол пути. </i><br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhc0kJwu7rkBsVBnIAsiVL3j31uw6u98jgVgaFy5JoibBOsjG4Xqh9nbgg1_gQeT9CQwNywNoMQ3_r_z_usrTdNcinDSGRt8f60ys772Ahe8AaOKAFwhRHR6YbrdEvuW2p1PqQbDyT-mKQ/s1600/9+paperbag+leporello.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhc0kJwu7rkBsVBnIAsiVL3j31uw6u98jgVgaFy5JoibBOsjG4Xqh9nbgg1_gQeT9CQwNywNoMQ3_r_z_usrTdNcinDSGRt8f60ys772Ahe8AaOKAFwhRHR6YbrdEvuW2p1PqQbDyT-mKQ/s640/9+paperbag+leporello.jpg" height="426" width="640" /></a></div>
<br />
<br />
<br />
Note: If you are making this projects with 52 pages your block will
be rather thick. You can leave it under a thick book/weight overnight
before attaching covers. What you see on my photos are only first 13
pages of my endless book. Since the back cover of my block is attached
with a temporary glue I will be adding pages as the project continues.<br />
<br />
<i>Внимание:
</i><br />

To tell you the truth I was not sure whether I should be writing about this rather personal matter here. I am trying to let bits of my life through into my blog but I am still not comfortable sharing too much ....<br />
A month ago out 14-year old wonderful blond girl, Nyook was diagnosed with adenocarcinoma. We brought her to the vet on Sunday after a bad nose-bleed. She was already monitored and treated for what seemed to be allergies and an infection but the big bleeding on Sunday didn't look like an allergic reaction.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEitsdKLdKjIm1ahOO1-rPctMrQGoVucqAhX26ItF_Ri1trIoTq-NTGYKkRM0Px9QzxWoxHnJvZQLkjK8XycmkDfBZ3fXJ25WQEWwiz7BJ6cVSq-mTFS1mRbg3AesI_B7Nqp3J1Uvl5PArA/s1600/Nyook+1.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="clear: left; float: left; margin-bottom: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="428" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEitsdKLdKjIm1ahOO1-rPctMrQGoVucqAhX26ItF_Ri1trIoTq-NTGYKkRM0Px9QzxWoxHnJvZQLkjK8XycmkDfBZ3fXJ25WQEWwiz7BJ6cVSq-mTFS1mRbg3AesI_B7Nqp3J1Uvl5PArA/s640/Nyook+1.jpg" width="640" /></a></div>
<br />
All the regular tests showed that Nyook was in a great shape; her eyes, her ears, her blood pressure and blood work were great. The doctor suggested a more detailed investigation, a head scan, and a biopsy. We left out "prettiness" overnight at the hospital and 24-hours later got the sad and scary preliminary results; it was most likely a tumour, a big one, pushing in her nasal cavity.
That Monday was tough; a blur of sadness, tears, and negative thoughts. The super-expensive surgery was out of the question, mostly because of the dog's age. We were worried about Nyook's overall condition, possibilities of frequent nasal bleeds, and the question of time left was definitely on our mind.<br />
<br />
While doctors were getting results of the biopsy we began our own research to find natural ways of supporting Nyook's health and controlling her cancer. What is described below is Nyook's current diet, constructed according to multiple and at times contradicting suggestions found mostly online.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEi0wtZ7rIh7PKHG2aWQPg_GmzOMWeQDyyvK4Cr6mHxbbt1wPz52SkSn7-V5Q6v4hFPyZUEnY5n02xuTACyCRTPPf2Z9VEpad-sLOYuV2K6-9TzL0tuyWV8lJL5zPN2URo6olsKf2ySmkfc/s1600/Nyook+2.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="clear: left; float: left; margin-bottom: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="426" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEi0wtZ7rIh7PKHG2aWQPg_GmzOMWeQDyyvK4Cr6mHxbbt1wPz52SkSn7-V5Q6v4hFPyZUEnY5n02xuTACyCRTPPf2Z9VEpad-sLOYuV2K6-9TzL0tuyWV8lJL5zPN2URo6olsKf2ySmkfc/s640/Nyook+2.jpg" width="640" /></a></div>
<ol>
<li>We eliminated all grains from her food: no more kibble, no more bone cookies, no more bread, no more rice</li>
<li>We switched her to a 99% raw diet. Nyook is currently eating a mix of raw chicken, raw beef, bits of raw bones, some canned sardines, and a mix of fruits and vegetables throughout the day</li>
<li>About 10-15% of her diet are vegetables and fruits. I've read tons of different opinions about fruits and veggies in dog's diet. The fact that Nyook has cancer adds additional restrictions so this is what we've decided upon:<br />small amounts of apples, pears, peaches, plums, berries<br />no overly sweet fruits (eg. bananas), no citrus fruits, no grapes (those could be harmful for any dog)<br />small amounts of raw cranberries to support Nyook's kidneys (due to the medication)<br />small amounts of green veggies (broccoli, chard, spinach), orange veggies (carrots, pumpkin, sweet potatoes), and others (cauliflower, zucchinis)<br />fresh parsley</li>
<li>Supplements:<br />fish oil, turmeric, flax seed oil mixed with quark, milk thistle and burdock tinctures, burdock infusion, blackstrap molasses, Yunnan baiyao</li>
<li>Medication (prescribed by the vet):<br />piroxicam</li>
</ol>
Nyook has a big meal once per day, around the dinner
time. She gets 2 small "snacks", one in the morning and one late in the
evening. <br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjco5udUeUm8uXq3Dr03rZaEakGTuk2N2p9yuLKpYM4OTlsl5IgOKsiKhQ4yDUXXG0DzDE_zGQ_nWvEUBHDyutUJVrNzI1RxBQ7ibecNImgZ_gIntXOD5IZDOvtgTnAcYHoE5t3cQ8gVTs/s1600/Nyook+winter.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="640" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjco5udUeUm8uXq3Dr03rZaEakGTuk2N2p9yuLKpYM4OTlsl5IgOKsiKhQ4yDUXXG0DzDE_zGQ_nWvEUBHDyutUJVrNzI1RxBQ7ibecNImgZ_gIntXOD5IZDOvtgTnAcYHoE5t3cQ8gVTs/s640/Nyook+winter.jpg" width="426" /></a></div>
<br />During the last consult the vet was talking about a time frame of several months. I am obviously hoping to beat this prediction and to have our beloved "prettiness" with us for much longer.<br />
<br />

Some of these ideas came from books and articles I've read, others from my own experience. I like to think of them as creative habits; tiny actions that help you maintain your creativity. Today I will share my first 3 favourites.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjteXHpnMeDVgO75jT06xowbCfJ1a_eBtFnNjRqm0xL4-_Ak4RoAo92xtv5HCFa-G5Z01Cr00zRXX2SDqOq4coQ7_XeHRdcMjAdZuCK7QzMtWa8heBA03Tu1iAUm-lRCCY_U78sn6bWwIs/s1600/creative+habits+1.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="clear: left; float: left; margin-bottom: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="446" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjteXHpnMeDVgO75jT06xowbCfJ1a_eBtFnNjRqm0xL4-_Ak4RoAo92xtv5HCFa-G5Z01Cr00zRXX2SDqOq4coQ7_XeHRdcMjAdZuCK7QzMtWa8heBA03Tu1iAUm-lRCCY_U78sn6bWwIs/s640/creative+habits+1.jpg" width="640" /></a></div>
<br />
<u><b>CARRY A NOTEBOOK</b></u><br />
You probably read, heard, seen this one before; every advocate of creativity suggests you carry a notebook at all times. I'll be honest, I was extremely sceptical of this advice.<br />
First of all, I have a really good memory and rarely feel the need to write my ideas down. Secondly, I do not have urges to write things down, I prefer to think them over. I was never successful at keeping a journal or a diary so having a notebook seems unnatural to me.<br />
Finally I am never sure what to write about ....
I gave the notebook idea a try because of my long commute - I decided to use it to draft my blog posts (in fact I am writing this one on my way to work). One day, when I was feeling creative, I jotted down some of my thoughts that later on became craft projects. Then, a couple of days later I was happy to have the notebook to write down names of artists my sister mentioned to me.<br />
<blockquote class="tr_bq">
<i>Before I knew it, the notebook became an important part of my creative process allowing me to"dump" all the ideas, free my head for the new ones, and to use its pages for planning and brainstorming.</i></blockquote>
Do not dismiss the idea of a notebook even if, like me, you do not feel the urge to write. Have it with you and start writing down your creative thoughts, I promise you'll see the benefits of this very soon.<br />
<br />
<br />
<u><b>FIND YOUR TIME OF THE DAY</b></u><br />
Each of us has our own time of day when our energy, capacities, and creativity are at their strongest. While I am not really a morning person I feel the most productive as soon as I wake up. These first waking hours are perfect for all the mental work and for my writing. My head feels clear and ideas are spilling out onto the page. Later on, during the day, I become "heavy" and quiet. I like this time for the routine, mundane work but do not expect any creative breakthroughs to happen. Later in the evening, my energy comes back but this time I am good with actual creating, rather than thinking or generating ideas. Evening is my time for crafting, working on images, or typing up my blog posts.<br />
This time-energy distribution seems very natural to me. In fact I can not imagine doing my things any other way and I am always surprised when people don't plan their days the same way. But we are all different and each of us feels optimal at different times. Eric, for example, can not be creative in the morning and my sister prefers to paint late at night, time when I am way too relaxed and sleepy to produce anything meaningful. Even our exercises schedules are different: Eric enjoys working out in the evening and I love a good morning workout that keeps me energised for the whole day.<br />
<blockquote class="tr_bq">
<i>Find the time of the day when you are most creative. Try different patterns and see how your body and your brain will react to them. Do not fight your natural cycle, work with it, and you'll be able to create more effortlessly.</i></blockquote>
<br />
<u><b>EXERCISE YOUR CREATIVITY</b></u><br />
I've already mentioned this and will probably mention over and over again, that I firmly believe that you can nurture your creativity.<br />
<blockquote class="tr_bq">
<i>Just like physical exercises strengthen your body, quizzed and riddles help your brain to stay agile, doing creative activities will help you in developing your creativity.</i> </blockquote>
If practicing your craft gets to be repetitive try finding a second (third, forth) creative hobby. And if your main "occupation" is not very creative having a creative outlet will definitely help you. Your "hobby" (this is how I call any creative activity done outside of work) might have little in common with your main occupation. In fact, the less it has in common the more beneficial it is, challenging you in new ways.<br />
I've first noticed this phenomenon during my ikebana classes when I had several ongoing paper projects at home. After a couple of weeks I noticed that I would struggle less with my ikebana arrangements; they came out easier, while remaining complex and interesting. Even my teacher noticed the progress, mentioning that my works were reaching a new level. At the same time my paper projects were changing; I created more, had lots of interesting ideas, and really enjoyed the final results.<br />
<blockquote class="tr_bq">
<i>If you have reached a plateau in your creative domain, if you are looking for new ideas, or if you simply want to nurture your creativity - learn a new craft or try yourself in a new artistic domain. </i> </blockquote>
You will be pleasantly surprised by the results!<br />
<br />
<br />
Here you have it, my 3 favourite habits that can help you awaken your creativity. I will be coming back to the topic sharing more tips and ideas that will undoubtedly help you along your creative journey.<br />

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
</div>
<br />
In <a href="http://sas-does.blogspot.ca/2013/08/minibook-how-to-part-1.html" target="_blank">the first part</a> I discussed 3 elements that help you to get started: an idea for the mini, choosing dimensions and binding for your book, and the selection of paper. Today I want to talk about 3 other important aspects: style of your minibook, materials and embellishments for the project, and the photos.<br />
<br />
<u><b>1. STYLE</b></u><br />
The style of your mini will be often dictated by the overall idea of the project. While I had to put my 100-day minibook project on hold, I am currently working on 2 albums for one of my customers. There were almost no restrictions for the project and while it's tempting to go "crazy" and creative I have to keep in mind the overall style: the albums are for 2 young girls and their mother, a talented photographer, asked me for a vintage-y style. I know that she is a big fan of the 50's and 60's so I am trying to keep this feel throughout the albums. You can see how the paper selected for one of these albums is dramatically different from the materials for my 100-day mini and the Europe minibook.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhoafu8wUcnmj71QGk1sdpgMYEo1qVRY0bLpLBHo_-psAOQxQcSfWCJURCO0aZHVhiFPyjGHips2gQl_oXVjTOeQXxE0vEYBQs82oJIHgwIXNyUgWch8_swve8xlxmIDfcuFEZp4tT2-6w/s1600/minibook+style+wm.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="clear: left; float: left; margin-bottom: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="314" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhoafu8wUcnmj71QGk1sdpgMYEo1qVRY0bLpLBHo_-psAOQxQcSfWCJURCO0aZHVhiFPyjGHips2gQl_oXVjTOeQXxE0vEYBQs82oJIHgwIXNyUgWch8_swve8xlxmIDfcuFEZp4tT2-6w/s640/minibook+style+wm.jpg" width="640" /></a></div>
Before selecting your paper and embellishments, before making the first page of your mini, think about the style. Here are some of the possibilities:<br />
<blockquote class="tr_bq">
vintage, modern, artsy, clean-and-simple, messy, elegant, romantic, childish, exotic, folk</blockquote>
If you are struggling with finding the style think about the main idea for your minibook (<a href="http://sas-does.blogspot.ca/2013/08/minibook-how-to-part-1.html" target="_blank">see part 1</a>):<br />
<blockquote class="tr_bq">
If you are making an album for your child it might be bright and childish.<br />If you are working on a travelling book you might lean towards romantic and messy feel, or maybe a completely opposite: clean, structured, and modern.</blockquote>
Finally, if you can not pinpoint your specific style, or if you need more ideas do the following exercise:<br />
<blockquote class="tr_bq">
write down the theme of your minibook. Let your mind wonder to come up with as many associations (words) for this idea as possible. Write all of them down. Use this list to help you select paper, embellishments, and other materials for your project.</blockquote>
<br />
<u><b>2. MATERIALS </b></u><br />
The theme of the project will serve as a destination. Once you know where you will be going it's time to pack! Time to select the paper (<a href="http://sas-does.blogspot.ca/2013/08/minibook-how-to-part-1.html" target="_blank">see part 1</a>) and decide on other materials. You can choose to be minimalistic and use only paper for your mini. Or you can choose to incorporate ribbons, buttons, paperclips, and other ephemera. In fact, you can make your whole mini with materials other than paper: fabric, cork sheets, wood veneer .... <br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgoLg3_wvxDO4SUaGhKwaby2Pm7Zw8sKa_hE6RwEJfsqCK9HNT4YStp8USEgmqX9fIT39M_SK16UTn0Ft_C5NVvRg8nofAZ-F_3D_uuWuNDhW4gdk65y_8L2VntFie-SlUMzlMjrFCy3fQ/s1600/girl+mini+material+wm.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="clear: left; float: left; margin-bottom: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="426" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgoLg3_wvxDO4SUaGhKwaby2Pm7Zw8sKa_hE6RwEJfsqCK9HNT4YStp8USEgmqX9fIT39M_SK16UTn0Ft_C5NVvRg8nofAZ-F_3D_uuWuNDhW4gdk65y_8L2VntFie-SlUMzlMjrFCy3fQ/s640/girl+mini+material+wm.jpg" width="640" /></a></div>
<br />
<br />
Material itself can serve as an inspiration for your project. I like to
collect some (all if possible) of the materials beforehand. This
selection is not final and it gets revised during the creative process
but having it ready from the beginning helps me to work on the page
layouts and it reminds me of the theme I've picked for my project. <br />
If you are like me, seeing a new collection of embellishments or finding a forgotten set of die cuts can easily tempt you to rethink the whole project in order to incorporate these new element. With the pre-made selection at hand this temptation is somewhat easier to manage. It's also faster to find the necessity brad in the pile of selected material rather than to dig for it through the whole stash.<br />
Using similar materials throughout the minibook unifies your project. I've wrote about this last year in the post about my <a href="http://sas-does.blogspot.ca/2012/09/august-journal-details.html" target="_blank">August minibook</a>.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiJ_PaTTHIttCGaRaidpCVUdAvtNQXXscp1TdTqovPEDh7McJ7xBGk5yS_fi1OXKutpDOG96mv1i7tkRlHLX9V4xabf94OEYFv2h_QKd8QKxP36ysHSe0KC9Rz4V3NsJ34vNvAgCxNOtc8/s1600/Europe+mini+material.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="clear: left; float: left; margin-bottom: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="428" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiJ_PaTTHIttCGaRaidpCVUdAvtNQXXscp1TdTqovPEDh7McJ7xBGk5yS_fi1OXKutpDOG96mv1i7tkRlHLX9V4xabf94OEYFv2h_QKd8QKxP36ysHSe0KC9Rz4V3NsJ34vNvAgCxNOtc8/s640/Europe+mini+material.jpg" width="640" /></a></div>
<br />
<br />
<u><b>3. PHOTOS</b></u><br />
There is more to photos than the 6x4 format. Even if you don't have a photo printer at home (I don't yet) you can experiment with different photo sizes. Here are some of the possibilities:<br />
<br />
<b>Combine small and large</b><br />
I love small photo formats so instead of printing all my shots 6x4 I minimise some of them and get four on the 6x4 canvas. These little 3x2 images are super cute and I get four of them printed at once. Sometime I used them on their own, other times I combine them with regular-sized photos.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEg6qDkRSHq7xCqyyz4IKqmM46dtUltCgxjt42g2QAgEF8_bxxxzFKr3nreM_bDlrO9x2zWP3HIFavwca4g_EQw6onDtfiS_7EOr4-WLLyLC2D_-hTwF1o1WaSJ3yWY8Rsed_MNOHr9vITI/s1600/small+pictures+wm.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="clear: left; float: left; margin-bottom: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="412" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEg6qDkRSHq7xCqyyz4IKqmM46dtUltCgxjt42g2QAgEF8_bxxxzFKr3nreM_bDlrO9x2zWP3HIFavwca4g_EQw6onDtfiS_7EOr4-WLLyLC2D_-hTwF1o1WaSJ3yWY8Rsed_MNOHr9vITI/s640/small+pictures+wm.jpg" width="640" /></a></div>
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
</div>
<b>Square</b><br />
Square images are extremely popular, mostly because of Instragram. But even if you do not take your pictures with a phone or do not bother having an Instagram account it is easy to crop any of your existing photos to make a square. And you can have so much fun with the square format: alternate between big and small images, combine big rectangular (6x4) photos with small square ones, or use a mosaic of small square shots for a fun collage.<br />
<br />
<b>Fake Polaroids</b><br />
I've shown fake Polaroids I used for my August mini before. It's a bit of work but the result is extremely cute! Follow my <a href="http://sas-does.blogspot.ca/2012/09/polaroid-diy.html" target="_blank">POLAROID DIY</a> tutorial and add some vintage style to your next mini.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhlEjt5tT5qv5mYmhXHXKl3tzk6H9uIJaQPDKBOVZFEqwZqtzd-vDM2xIiWFlg85BrK1s1PTMy9uOFFZpMmNXwF4H4sHQ6o1bZYaxrailWHyHPdBZg1jph11tV2Z5c_fYSwJXk3V66TXk4/s1600/polaroids+collage.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="clear: left; float: left; margin-bottom: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="426" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhlEjt5tT5qv5mYmhXHXKl3tzk6H9uIJaQPDKBOVZFEqwZqtzd-vDM2xIiWFlg85BrK1s1PTMy9uOFFZpMmNXwF4H4sHQ6o1bZYaxrailWHyHPdBZg1jph11tV2Z5c_fYSwJXk3V66TXk4/s640/polaroids+collage.jpg" width="640" /></a></div>
<br />
No matter what photo style/size you choose try to stick to one or two per project. Having too many different images sizes can end up looking messy ... and not in the fun artsy messy way.<br />
<br />
Hope these suggestions will help you with your next minibook project. And I would love to see what you are crafting, feel free to share in the comments.<br />

I am re-reading Twyla Tharp's "<a href="http://www.amazon.com/The-Creative-Habit-Learn-Life/dp/0743235274/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1379597851&sr=8-1&keywords=creative+habit" target="_blank">The Creative Habit</a>" - an extremely inspiring, practical, and beautiful book. <br />
<br />
While the full review is still in works here are some of my favourite moments from the first chapter "I walk into a white room".<br />

<blockquote class="tr_bq">
The blank space can be humbling. But I've faced it my whole professional
life. It's my job. It's also my calling. Bottom line: <b>Filling this
empty space constitutes my identity</b><i>. </i></blockquote>
<br />
<i>After so many years, I've learned that being creative is a full-time job
with its own daily patterns. That's why writers, for example, like to
establish routines for themselves. The most productive ones get started
early in the morning, when the world is quiet, the phones aren't
ringing, and their minds are rested, alert, and not yet polluted by
other people's words. They might set a goal for themselves -- write
fifteen hundred words, or stay at their desk until noon -- but the real
secret is that they do this every day. In other words, they are
disciplined. </i><b>Over time, as the daily routines become second nature,
discipline morphs into habit</b>.<br />
<br />
<blockquote class="tr_bq">
If it isn't obvious already, I come down on the side of hard work. That's why this book is called The Creative Habit. <b>Creativity is a habit, and the best creativity is a result of good work habits</b>. That's it in a nutshell. </blockquote>
<br />
<i>Destiny, quite often, is a determined parent. Mozart was hardly some
naive prodigy who sat down at the keyboard and, with God whispering in
his ears, let the music flow from his fingertips. It's a nice image for
selling tickets to movies, but whether or not God has kissed your brow,
you still have to work. </i><b>Without learning and preparation, you won't know
how to harness the power of that kiss</b>.<br />
<br />
<blockquote class="tr_bq">
<b>No one can give you your subject matter</b>, your creative content; if
they could, it would be their creation and not yours. <b>But there's a
process that generates creativity</b> -- and you can learn it. And you can
make it habitual. </blockquote>
<br />
<b>It takes skill to bring
something you've imagined into the world</b><i>: to use words to create
believable lives, to select the colours and textures of paint to
represent a haystack at sunset, to combine ingredients to make a
flavorful dish. </i><b>No one is born with that skill</b><i>. It is developed through
exercise, through repetition, through a blend of learning and reflection
that's both painstaking and rewarding. And it takes time </i><br />
<br />
<blockquote class="tr_bq">
The way I figure it, my work habits are applicable to everyone. You'll
find that I'm a stickler about preparation. My daily routines are
transactional. Everything that happens in my day is a transaction
between the external world and my internal world. Everything is raw
material. Everything is relevant. Everything is usable.<b>
Everything feeds into my creativity.</b> But without proper preparation, I
cannot see it, retain it, and use it. Without the time and effort
invested in getting ready to create, you can be hit by the thunderbolt
and it'll just leave you stunned. </blockquote>

I've missed it last year but this time I am super excited to be one of the participants. I will also be passing my next ikebana exam early next year! <br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEixxwsRaHJoV_dNTS6R2bHdFVahdwnyD6SPV4TbXrmheC6oc2XudLAFcmRiMon9zuLmusJtz_AZ93-wUQ-5rZtVnYtcTQ7lBwOmwXmcSqLCQPrCUAWJ619Bv6QlVV95BkC0eaCDYWv5tDM/s1600/modern+ikebana+arrangements.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="clear: left; float: left; margin-bottom: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="640" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEixxwsRaHJoV_dNTS6R2bHdFVahdwnyD6SPV4TbXrmheC6oc2XudLAFcmRiMon9zuLmusJtz_AZ93-wUQ-5rZtVnYtcTQ7lBwOmwXmcSqLCQPrCUAWJ619Bv6QlVV95BkC0eaCDYWv5tDM/s640/modern+ikebana+arrangements.jpg" width="640" /></a></div>
<br />
These are my free style arrangements from 2012. I can't say I love them all. Some of them were weak, on some days I didn't feel extremely creative, and at times material was challenging. But there are some that I simply love, like the 2 beautiful arrangements below:<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhUtWSG1b2-3QEf8GQx-r-6P4jy27PRz-yP3A_Hjv2CELWRg7i0UaARz9ukCPMp0zfCFeCKHK3qTY9tMAG_wxUhc_D3PP_i_DSOCkS6FVey1awXQ1FHGrXr0nPnkSQ8t7tPUIvcXiIBo50/s1600/favorite+freestyle+ikebanawm.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="clear: left; float: left; margin-bottom: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="422" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhUtWSG1b2-3QEf8GQx-r-6P4jy27PRz-yP3A_Hjv2CELWRg7i0UaARz9ukCPMp0zfCFeCKHK3qTY9tMAG_wxUhc_D3PP_i_DSOCkS6FVey1awXQ1FHGrXr0nPnkSQ8t7tPUIvcXiIBo50/s640/favorite+freestyle+ikebanawm.jpg" width="640" /></a></div>
There is something very interesting about this one:<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhV3I-vnB2JPtOp-YJ4Ocu1D2s-rnFMnEHz1pX-0R9bNGvDBSK1LsV-BbF5_E87FnNlJX9cCQmuKTpCd-7dgciQUuXupyFR37sW4rYzMAmt1JQQAcizA9Y4s3Dv3_fLK43KY4pMnQQgzlU/s1600/ikebana4.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="clear: left; float: left; margin-bottom: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="640" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhV3I-vnB2JPtOp-YJ4Ocu1D2s-rnFMnEHz1pX-0R9bNGvDBSK1LsV-BbF5_E87FnNlJX9cCQmuKTpCd-7dgciQUuXupyFR37sW4rYzMAmt1JQQAcizA9Y4s3Dv3_fLK43KY4pMnQQgzlU/s640/ikebana4.jpg" width="640" /></a></div>
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
</div>
And while I wouldn't call this last arrangement my favourite, it is very much Kuryo Shotokai and it received a lot of praise from my teacher.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

The title for this post is a question <a href="http://sirkenrobinson.com/" target="_blank">sir Ken Robinson</a> </div>
<div style="text-align: right;">
recommends each of us to ask.</div>
<div style="text-align: right;">
Instead of wondering "how creative am I?" </div>
<div style="text-align: right;">
think "how am I creative?" </div>
<br />
<blockquote class="tr_bq">
<i>What is creativity? <br />Can creativity be nurtured? <br />Are some of us born creative while others are not? <br />Can I become more creative? </i>
</blockquote>
These are some of the questions that run through my head while I work on the <a href="http://sas-does.blogspot.ca/search/label/awakening%20creativity" target="_blank">Awakening Creativity</a> series. I do not have all the answers yet, but from my reading, research, and personal experience I now firmly believe that <b>creativity can be developed and nurtured</b>.<br />
<br />
I believe that <b>everyone can create</b>. How I can be so sure? Because for most of my life I didn't think myself to be creative. For most of my life I was sure that some of us (like <a href="http://30monthstonyaa.tumblr.com/" target="_blank">my sister</a> who is an artist, or Eric, who was always involved in creative projects be it music, photography or graphic arts) are born creative, while others (me) are not.<br />
I used to gawk at creative projects and felt like I could never come up with one myself. I was sure that my creative gene was simply not there. Fast forward to today, when my head is buzzing with ideas. I try, test, create, and share craft projects. Days when I do not create feel empty and dull. Today I believe that each of us has his/her own creative potential. I also believe that <b>creativity is not limited to arts or crafts</b>. You can be a creative mathematician, a creative researcher, or a creative homemaker.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEikXWqVNTILpt4LNIARtRvWo623038VxAZMSAxs8njdbYcSblGp1Ko_Hj54jA14ZE6dA36xrVYFAUwgVqsyE0VFyMLFjGT4iaHxd9IxLkFvgMMsfi1nxSrO6eIvL2rQemiALEKtK4gzSVI/s1600/creativity+you+creative.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="640" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEikXWqVNTILpt4LNIARtRvWo623038VxAZMSAxs8njdbYcSblGp1Ko_Hj54jA14ZE6dA36xrVYFAUwgVqsyE0VFyMLFjGT4iaHxd9IxLkFvgMMsfi1nxSrO6eIvL2rQemiALEKtK4gzSVI/s640/creativity+you+creative.jpg" width="452" /></a></div>
<br />
<b>My creative awakening began with a very mundane activity</b>: cooking. About 10 years ago, when I moved out of my parents house I taught myself how to cook. I had little culinary knowledge and lacked any cooking experience. Like many others I began with cookbooks, cooking magazines, and blogs. I followed the recipes, learned different techniques, and in a couple of months felt very comfortable with my every-day cooking. In fact, I was so comfortable that I stopped relying on the recipes and began tweaking, adapting, and, at times, completely changing them to satisfy my taste. I no longer followed one set of instructions, instead I would find several recipes, combine them, adjust, and come up with my own creation. It didn't feel like a creative process at all. At best it felt like an attempt to vary my weekday menus.<br />
<br />
One day, during one of those intensely interesting conversations with Eric, the topic of creativity came up.<br />
-Well, <b>I am just not creative</b> - I said with a certainty in my voice. - <b>I am not good at painting, I can not improvise when playing piano, and I do not dance, sing, or perform</b>!<br />
- But you cook - said Eric<br />
.... and went on explaining to me that my creative strength was not in visual arts but in the culinary art, in the way I created new dishes, combined ingredients, mixed spices, and assembled menus. This was the first time I thought of creativity as something applicable to any task, any process or job.<br />
<br />
<b>If you never thought yourself to be creative I am certain you are wrong! </b><br />
<blockquote class="tr_bq">
<i>You might not be an amazing writer but maybe you are an inventive engineer. <br />You might not be a talented singer but maybe you come up with new games and stories for your little ones. <br />You might not be the next Picasso but maybe you find new ways of performing the same 'boring' task at work.</i></blockquote>
Truth is, <b>you are creative in one field or another</b> (or in all of them). You just have to find it. <b>You need to find your creativity because it already found you!</b><br />
<br />
<i>The beautiful artwork for the <a href="http://sas-does.blogspot.ca/search/label/awakening%20creativity" target="_blank">Awakening Creativity</a> series is made by my talented sister <a href="http://30monthstonyaa.tumblr.com/" target="_blank">Liza</a></i><br />

Some major changes happened. No, not the wedding bells but a full-time "nine-to-five" job. It's exciting, inspiring, but also a little bit scary. I am getting used to it and hope to still have tome to craft, take pictures, blog, and continue to grow this little place of mine.<br />
Beside my new work I've also been involved in a couple of creative projects and have an order for customised photo albums. Busy busy busy....<br />

Thank you for staying with me during this transitional period. I will find and adopt a new routine, my way to combine serious and fun, work and play, teaching and learning. While away from blog-writing I sill managed to do some blog reading and here are 10 of my favourite blog posts from this week.<br />

While the process is creative and there are no precise instructions feel free to use these steps to help you with your project.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
</div>
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjxYRBiPX7qlJA-k_4DOAT2Cz4VC4le7yoVZbzmmoow0KRHIN6MUfHIa2hJ_mFshdA0y5jxrEZly2NRsuKMGJgzusUX9_yCIsz8TL71P_fqsRDr3mULgLFIbCcGI0t2L9vhiamlKHgIuOs/s1600/minibook-how-to.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="clear: left; float: left; margin-bottom: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="426" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjxYRBiPX7qlJA-k_4DOAT2Cz4VC4le7yoVZbzmmoow0KRHIN6MUfHIa2hJ_mFshdA0y5jxrEZly2NRsuKMGJgzusUX9_yCIsz8TL71P_fqsRDr3mULgLFIbCcGI0t2L9vhiamlKHgIuOs/s640/minibook-how-to.jpg" width="640" /></a> <b> </b><br />
<b>1. </b><u><b>IDEA</b></u><br />
Having an idea helps with the material selection, the colour scheme, and with deciding on the dimensions of the minibook.<br />
<i>My first mini is about my Europe trip and the second one is a 100-day countdown to my birthday. </i><br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgQu1nSO_QiNLaurlt2iCwQTcFJ1Z0AArj0Y8tf9gMTvtKzSJwTsvfQlDSt644uh8TePKYq9LsR53Tg4VwXcUmVUn4fEzKxsiLftPewLj1tDY401ppBC_YPfvzS_MdHTis1W-bYskZuofg/s1600/minibook-day-100.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="clear: left; float: left; margin-bottom: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="306" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgQu1nSO_QiNLaurlt2iCwQTcFJ1Z0AArj0Y8tf9gMTvtKzSJwTsvfQlDSt644uh8TePKYq9LsR53Tg4VwXcUmVUn4fEzKxsiLftPewLj1tDY401ppBC_YPfvzS_MdHTis1W-bYskZuofg/s640/minibook-day-100.jpg" width="640" /></a></div>
<br />
<h4>
</h4>
<h4>
<b>2. </b><u><b>DIMENSIONS and BINDING</b></u></h4>
Ring minibooks are fun and simple. You can keep adding pages or choose to reorganise them at any time. Ring binding doesn't require any preliminary work, simply punch the pages and slip the rings.
Or you can choose to bind your minibook. Decide on the type of binding (<a href="http://sas-does.blogspot.ca/2005/10/recycled-notebook-tutorial-part-1.html" target="_blank">coptic</a> or <a href="http://sas-does.blogspot.ca/2005/01/long-stitch-binding-tutorial-part-1.html" target="_blank">long-stitch</a> work great) and the number of signatures. Bind it now or wait to stitch the book once it's finished.<br />
As for dimensions choose whatever is comfortable for you. Make sure that chosen dimensions work well with your images and content.<br />
<i>I will be using ring binding for my 100-day mini while European minibook will get a nice <a href="http://sas-does.blogspot.ca/2005/01/long-stitch-binding-tutorial-part-1.html" target="_blank">long-stitch binding</a>.</i> <br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEih5OAX3p6nWU7UwpeoEEx9TQXIzggJYwRL94W40fko0bhHjh_dAIaloofHJQ262_kQD6Vwe4i2IqkwjdiZ5LJvUV9wYhbiY3-DZEjI6EE-VYieUW763OJl_xP7ZFBP5T2U-VzUCJppWM0/s1600/Europemini-material2.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="clear: left; float: left; margin-bottom: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="428" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEih5OAX3p6nWU7UwpeoEEx9TQXIzggJYwRL94W40fko0bhHjh_dAIaloofHJQ262_kQD6Vwe4i2IqkwjdiZ5LJvUV9wYhbiY3-DZEjI6EE-VYieUW763OJl_xP7ZFBP5T2U-VzUCJppWM0/s640/Europemini-material2.jpg" width="640" /></a></div>
<h4>
</h4>
<h4>
<b> 3. <u>PAPER</u></b></h4>
This is the most exciting part. If you are new to minibooks and scrapbooking start with a paper pack. You won't need to worry about matching colours and designs since papers in those packs go well together. Most paper packs come with matching embellishments that could be handy when decorating your minibook.<br />
Or you can mix and match papers yourself. Try keeping the same theme and colours so your finished album feels "whole".<br />
<i>I am very excited about the Europe mini. I decided to use a mix of scrapbooking papers and random papers for my stash. I will be also adding lots of ephemera and papers collected during the trip.</i><br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

<i>For the 100-day minibook I will be using scrapbooking paper from different paper packs: "Carefree" and "Fresh" by <a href="http://authentiquepaper.com/" target="_blank">Authentique</a> and Ambrosia by <a href="http://www.basicgrey.com/scrapbook/" target="_blank">Basic Grey</a> for a nice mix of brown, blue, grey, red, and orange. </i><br />
<br />
